Upper Eyelid Surgery in NYC

The aging process causes skin to gradually lose elasticity, which is responsible for many of the facial changes we experience as we grow older. In the eye region, the constant downward pull of gravity and this loss of elasticity cause excess skin to gather on the upper eyelids. Lowering of the eyebrows is often a contributing part of the upper eyelid issue. Not only does the skin excess in the upper eyelids create a heavy eyelid that makes us look older and tired, but it can also interfere with vision. The only way to correct this problem is through upper eyelid surgery in NYC, also know as an eyelid lift or blepharoplasty. This surgical procedure is performed to eliminate excess skin on the upper eyelids to restore a natural, youthful appearance.

Ideal candidate for upper eyelid lift

Dr. Westreich performs upper eyelid surgery for two reasons: Ideal candidates for this surgery will show marked droopiness or heaviness of the upper eyelids without substantial eyebrow ptosis (dropping). This may manifest as an excess fold of skin that droops into the eyes or a bulge of fat in the center of the upper eyelids. If you are considering upper eyelid surgery, you should be in good overall health and not suffer from any serious eye conditions. Most of our NYC eyelid surgery patients are over 35, but occasionally Dr. Westreich treats younger patients who have a family history of heavy eyelids. Patients with substantial eyebrow ptosis should also consider a lateral brow lift or full endoscopic brow lift.

Procedure overview

An upper eyelid lift can be performed using general anesthesia, sedation anesthesia, or local anesthesia. After the anesthesia is administered, Dr. Westreich identifies where he will make the incisions on the upper eyelids. He looks for a place that will be well concealed within the natural folds of the eyelids to minimize the occurrence of visible scarring. Once he has gained access, he removes excess skin, muscle and fat, and then finely closes the incision. If an eyebrow lift is also required, it is done prior to your NYC upper eyelid surgery.

Recovery process

In most cases, patients return home on the same day as their surgery and take at least one week off from work and other regular activities. Dr. Westreich usually removes the stitches within 5 to 7 days following surgery during a post-surgical appointment. There is usually a moderate amount of swelling and bruising in the eye region after the surgery, so many of our patients prefer to stay at home during the first week of their recovery. Most of the swelling and bruising dissipates by the end of that week, although it is normal for a small amount of swelling to linger for up to 6 weeks. Dr. Westreich advises his patients to avoid things that may increase the risk of bleeding, such as vitamin E, fish oil, excess dietary salt, and aspirin. Patients should also refrain from strenuous activities and exercise for several weeks, as these activities can increase swelling, even after it has initially subsided.
