Lower Eyelid Surgery in NYC

The eye region is one of the areas of the face that is most susceptible to the effects of aging. As the muscles around the eyes become weaker and skin loses its youthful elasticity, fat beneath the skin may bulge forward, creating under eye bags and puffiness. Loss of elasticity and a diminished collagen supply contribute to the formation of wrinkles and creases around the eyes. Everyone will experience these signs of eye aging, but the extent of these changes will vary between individuals. Unfortunately, creams and non-invasive treatments alone cannot always correct these common complaints. The most effective way for some patients to rejuvenate the under eye region is to undergo lower eyelid surgery in New York City.

Lower eyelid surgery, also known as a lower eyelid lift or blepharoplasty, is performed to improve the appearance of the area under the eyes. It can eliminate folds and wrinkles, correct under eye bags and hollows, and/or minimize puffiness. Lower eyelid surgery can be performed as a standalone procedure or it can be paired with other procedures, such as upper eyelid surgery or a facelift.

Ideal candidates

If you’re unhappy with your appearance due to the affects of the aging process on your eyes, lower eyelid surgery may be the right choice for you. You may be a candidate for eye surgery if you are in good overall health and do not have any underlying eye conditions that would increase the risk of surgery. You’ll also need to be able to stop working and take a break from regular activities for one week while you recover from surgery.

Lower Eyelid Procedure overview

Lower eyelid surgery can be performed using general anesthesia, intravenous sedation, or local anesthesia. Once the patient has been anesthetized, Dr. Westreich makes a tiny incision just below the lower eyelashes. He takes great care to make any external incision in an area of the eye that will naturally conceal any scarring. Once he has access to the structures beneath the skin, he will tighten the musculature that supports the eyes, remove or reposition fat, and/or remove excess skin. In some cases, he may make the incision on the inside of the lower eyelid, using a technique called a transconjunctival incision. In this approach, excess fat is manipulated, but no skin is removed. If skin removal is needed, a lower eyelid pinch procedure can be done at the same time. In some cases, free fat grafting can be done to reduce under eye hollows. Once all changes are made, Dr. Westreich will carefully close the incision site with sutures and may apply bandages or gauze. Although individuals often seek treatment for ptosis due to functional issues, many wish to have the eyelids repaired for cosmetic reasons. A ptosis repair with an upper eyelid blepharoplasty can brighten the eyes and make them appear more alert.

Tips for a quick recovery after lower eyelid surgery

Lower eyelid surgery is performed on a highly visible area of the face that is subject to lots of movement during everyday activities. As such, it is will be very difficult to hide the fact that you have undergone eyelid surgery. You should expect a significant amount of swelling and bruising to be present for at least one week. For this reason, most of our patients decide to stay at home for a full week following surgery. By the second week following surgery, you should be able to resume normal activities and begin to see the initial effects of the procedure. Bruising will be less noticeable by the second week, but some amount of swelling can linger for 6 – 8 weeks. Based on his many years of performing eyelid surgery, Dr. Westreich knows that certain things can speed the recovery process. These include:
